In honor of Labor day we took a small road trip to Craters of the Moon National Park. Our friends Sean and Amy along with the Strachan's joined us for a day full of exploration and picnic lunches.
The Craters of the Moon is a 750,000 acre national monument. Federal geologists explored the area in 1901
We hit the road early in the morning meeting the Strachan's at the park and began our day with a small walk around the North Crater Flow Trail.
The rocks were really shinny and beautiful.
Due to being lava rock, they rocks were extremely light and easy to move around.
After we finished our walk of the North Crater Trail, we stopped at the Spatter Cones.
By now we were all ready for lunch. We had Walking Tacos- or Taco Salad. It was delicious!
After lunch we took a tour of the Indian Tunnel. It is named after the Indian Prayer Circles that were found in the area. Many people believe that the Shoshone Indians used the lava tube to store food in and for shelter in the winter months.

Sean had just finished a Natural Disasters Class last semester so he knew a lot about the different rocks and land forms around the area.
After the tour we headed over to the Devils Orchard Nature Trail were we got to see wicked looking trees.
Lastly we circled back and hiked to the top of the Inferno Cone. It is 6181 feet and the wind blew like crazy!

After the park we stopped in at the small town of Arco for some burgers and ice cream. It was a great day and we couldn't have asked for better weather or company.
Sadly I did not get my dream of going into labor on Labor Day! However we did run into quite a few people who seemed extremely impressed that I was out hiking through lava tubes two weeks before I am due to have Baby Green.
