Last weekend was the 2013 Hilliard Family Reunion in Lengby, Minnesota. My Mother, Father, and Sister traveled to our house on Tuesday to rest and prepare for the last leg of the journey. After work on Wednesday we drove to Devils Lake, North Dakota and spent the night at the Holiday Inn Express.
Between Williston and Devils Lake we came across the town of Rugby. It reminded Alan of Ronan, MT because it had a Subway (We ate dinner there). From a book Arlin and Jannet (two of our co-works) gave us Alan knew there was something significant about the place. It is the geographical center of North America! As any good tourist would do we lined everyone up for a photo in front of the official point. You can't tell but the concrete pad we are standing on is in the shape of a heart. Below is a sign explaining the monument.
On Thursday, July 4th we woke early to pick up some additional riders for the journey. In Lakota, my Aunt Linda joined us and in Mapes my Grandma Mabel. Alan hadn't been to my Grandpa's grave so that was the next stop before Larimore where my Uncle Earl lives. Grandma got of the bus (As Alan kept saying) in Larimore and we drove to Grand Forks. It was lunch time when we arrived so after a vote Olive Garden was the cuisine of choice.
Let's just say the food was pretty good. Ollecka wasn't excited at all to eat there.... can't you tell by the anticipation on her face!
If a water tower with a smiley face like this doesn't make your day then I don't know what would.
Finally we made it to Minnesota! We felt very welcome. ha
It wouldn't have been the 4th of July without fireworks so we all went to the show at Bagley Lake. When we arrived at the Quality Inn on the outskirts of Bemdji we were tired from the day's activities. Stay tuned for the next day's adventures with Paul and Babe!
