Memorial Day Weekend 2013

In lou of it being almost the 4th of July I figured I better get on this and get everyone caught up to speed on our where-abouts before we celebrate the 4th.

It has been almost two years since we visited the Zimmermans in Dawson, ND so when we heard Memorial Day weekend was going to give us an extra day off we backed our bags and headed eastish.  Friday after work we rushed home to threw our belongings in the xB and hit the road.

Little did we know but the road can hit back pretty well.  No more than ten miles from our duplex a rock smashed into our car windshield breaking both pains of glass and the pin holding the wiper blade.   You can see in the photo below the bulls-eye, cracks and pieces of the glass on our dash.

Not more than twenty minutes after the rock incident my father called wondering what we were doing for the three day weekend.  He was staying in Minot and had the weekend off as well.  Since we were headed that direction anyway he decided to tag along too.

Alan likes to venture through the country and see the little towns and farms so we took Highway 52 from Minot towards Jamestown before getting on Highway 3 that goes to Steele, ND.  It had gotten dark not many miles after we turned down Highway 3 so getting to Steele was a much anticipated turn because it meant we were getting close to our destination.  Three miles from Steele Alan noticed large reflective signs saying "accident ahead".  Sure enough we weren't more than 20 minuets from the Zimmerman's and couldn't get through.  A semi truck had caught the edge of the road and over corrected causing the truck to role on it's side in the middle of the road.  Finally crews cleared the road a little before midnight and let traffic through.

In the morning we all piled into the Zimmerman's car and headed into Bismarck for some fun at the Zoo and Carnival. Alan and Taylor HAD to sit in the back seat.

We ate lunch ate Johnny Carinos, with my Aunt and Uncle David and Dinah.

After lunch we headed to the Zoo. Once we were at the Zoo, Collin located a huge nail in the car tire. Lisa and my dad headed off to get it fixed, while Alan and I took on 2 little kiddos at the Zoo.

Taylor was not happy about having to be the brown bear.

The weather was really nice and cool, so the animals were really active! The tigers were my favorite.

The Zoo experience was really fun. I kept telling Alan this is what it is going to be like once we start having kids so this is good practice.

After the Zoo, Lisa and my dad picked us up and we headed to this little kiddo carnival that was going on in a parking lot. It was fun, even though watching Collin and Taylor go round and round made me feel very sick.

After the rides we found the quarter machine. It is one of those games that tricks you in to sinking 5 or 10 dollars into it and getting about 1 dollar in return. Needless to say my dad, Alan and Collin all were pretty taken with the idea of playing 1 more quarter.

After our day in Bismarck, we planned to spend the day on the farm. Taylor found a new coloring buddy that kept her and him busy for most of the morning.

About mid afternoon we headed out side to shoot some hoops. ( I was the picture taker)

Our afternoon snack had to be some cherry's!

Lisa took me for a four wheeler ride around the farm. It is really flat here, but still pretty in its own way.

We left Monday morning and headed back to Williston. Alan being Alan, wanted to take the long way back and wonder through the country. On our way back we found this giant rock with a tree growing in the middle of it.

We also decide to stop and see Knife River Indian Villages since we work for Knife River and all. The Villages use to look like the picture below. Their homes are made out of mud and sticks. the Indians would camp here all summer long and and then move their homes into Tipi's in the winter.
This is the inside of their mud hut.
We took a little walk down by the river to see the watering hole.

After the Villages we headed a little East and over the river. We saw the Garrison Damn. It is huge!
We also found out that they provide tours and are hoping to take one some time during our summer.

Once we got back to Minot to drop off my dad. We went out to dinner and the famous Buffalo Wild Wings. It was really nice and not near as busy as the one in Williston.

By the end of the weekend our tummies were full and happy! It was really fun to see everyone and we made some great memories! Can't wait for our next memorial day trip!
