We spent the summer working for Knife River again. This is Alan's third season here, and my second. It has started to feel a lot like home... not sure if this feeling is a good thing or bad thing considering that we are in North Dakota! Each year we have lived in the Knife River Duplexes or "Man Camp." They are quite nice considering what we could be living in around here. We have our own two bedroom apartment and a shared laundry room that connects to another two bedroom apartment. It is a little smaller then when we are living in Rexburg, but very sufficient for our needs while we are in North Dakota.
This year we came a few weeks earlier then last year and wanted to try planting a little garden. We did some landscaping first and then planted some corn, sunflowers, spinach, lettuce, herbs, a lilac bush, flowers.
The corn and sunflowers were a slow start. We blame it on the cool weather, amount of rain we've received and the soil in the man camp. We didn't get to eat the corn or see the sun flowers bloom but they are sure fun to grow and give us a reason to get outside after a long day in the office.
After we got the corn growing we wanted to add some big flower pots out front. We couldn't justify investing a lot of money into the pots. I spotted these big metal tub things around the man camp. Alan informed me that they were break drums, I think they make better flower pots, personally.
Above is a wild mini sunflower that we had pop up in our flower bed, I couldn't bring myself to kill it. It is so cute and fits right into our little home. The middle picture is a plant that I got as a gift for helping a co-worker out with some paper work.
This year the man camp has some new friendly neighbors. Alan was more then thrilled when I suggested that pick up some kitty food. There are three kittens and Mama Kitty. They are fun furry and full of energy.
In addition to the cats, we also had two little girls that loved to spend their evening outside with us coloring on our side walks and helping us weed our flower beds.
The little girls are 6 years old and just moved up to North Dakota this summer. They have a heart of gold and love to help us with and little project we have going on.
Life in a man camp is really interesting at times. However there is a sense of family and home here. Our memories we have made here will be with us forever.
